Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) was introduced across the European Union, to raise professional driving standards and improve road safety. All professional bus and coach drivers (PCV categories D1, D1E, D & DE) and lorry drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tons (LGV categories C1,
C1E, C & CE) must undertake Driver CPC training, if they want to drive for a living.

It is aimed not only at improving the knowledge and skills of LGV and PCV drivers when they first start work, but also at ensuring those skills are maintained and developed throughout the driver's working life and developing career.

Our courses include a fuel efficiency course, a carriage of dangerous goods and a safe loading of vehicles and manual handling course, and each is completely designed to suit you and your needs.

New and old drivers

All new drivers must achieve the initial qualification along with their vocational licence if they wish to drive professionally. On passing the initial qualification, they will be issued with a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) valid for 5 years.

Drivers who held a vocational licence entitlement (category C1, C1E, C or CE) prior to 10th September 2009, will be granted acquired rights (Grandfather Rights) up until 9th September 2014. Those who wish to continue driving for a living after this date, will need to have completed 35 hours of JAUPT approved periodic training by this date. Once 35 hours have been completed, they too will be issued with a DQC.

Periodic training courses

Periodic training is continuous professional development for bus, coach and lorry drivers. It carries on throughout the professional drivers’ career, no matter how infrequently they drive. Those who drive for a living must complete a minimum of 35 hours of periodic training during every five year cycle for as long as they wish to drive for a living.

The minimum length of a periodic training course is 7 hours. Courses can, however, be split into two periods of 3.5 hours, providing the second period starts within 24 hours of the completion of the first period.
